CYBER NOTES March, 2007 by Dave Benore

What about downloads

What are downloads? Downloads are files or programs that one can “download” from the Internet onto your computer. They are offered free (freeware) by many web sites, but here is the rub! Some of them contain viruses or spyware!

Many web sites offer safe and free software that can be downloaded and used by you, the computer operator. Several web sites offer free “toolbars”. These are programs that place a new toolbar on your computer screen. It will have buttons that you can click to swiftly jump to many different web sites of interest, like perhaps weather reports. Sounds like a good idea? Some are—some are not. One thing that usually happens when adding toolbars—your computer slows down, especially when booting up. The reason is these toolbars are programs that run in the background all the time.

Another thing some toolbars do is to subject you to pop-up ads continually. Or, if they are spyware, they can report your web browsing activity to another web site. That site then sends you ads relating to web sites you have visited. My personal inclination is to not use any of them that did not come with the computer when I bought it!

I avoid toolbars but I do occasionally download a free program. BUT, I only do so when the program or web site has been recommended as safe by some person or group I trust! So how does one find out about the safe programs? Computer magazines’ recommendations are trustworthy. Some computer experts like Kim Komando (www.Komando.com) are trustworthy. Your friend next door may or may not be! Computer clubs can be a great source of information about free downloads as well as a great many things concerning computers.

What we need in VOCA is a good computer club. I know VOCA would cooperate with one should one be formed. How about it you more experienced users? Want to have some fun with others and help them at the same time. You don’t have to be an expert to operate a computer club because the members learn from each other, not from an instructor. If you are interested, give me a call at 284-3187. I would like to talk to you about it.

One last thing: Another beginners’ computer class will be held at VOCA starting Thursday, May 3, 2007, on Tuesday and Thursday Mornings, 9 to 11 AM, for about 7 weeks. No need to bring a computer to class. It is free to VOCA members, $5 per class to others. For information call Dave Benore at 284-3187. The classes are fun and informational; and there are no dumb questions!
