TYPES OF FILES (“STUFF”)

CATEGORIES OF FILES


1. OPERATING SYSTEM

(e.g. UNIX, CPM, DOS, Windows 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, ME, XP)


2. COMPUTER CONTROL & SETUP

(e.g. files used at boot-up to define computer settings and communications)


3. DRIVERS (for each peripheral device)

(e.g. Printers, Monitors, Scanners, etc.)


4. PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES

(e.g. Assembly, C, C+, C++, Basic) These are programs used to write other programs, by programmers.


5. APPLICATIONS (programs)

(e.g. Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Database, Email, Internet Browser, Presentation, Utilities, & Special Purpose Programs like appointment books)


6. DATA (your results)

(e.g. your own letters, emails, tax returns, budgets, etc.)


7. HELP

These files come with many kinds of programs and are meant to help the operator in using the program. Sometimes tutorials are included.
